Former public services DG Osman S Cassim laid to rest – eNews Malaysia

PETALING JAYA: The late former director-general of the public services division, Osman S Cassim, who died final evening, was laid to rest on the Taman Sri Sinar Muslim cemetery in Segambut, Kuala Lumpur, this morning.

Earlier, the physique was taken to the Al Ubudiah Mosque, Segambut Dalam, to be bathed and shrouded, adopted by the funeral prayers, eNM reported.

More than 30 individuals, together with members of the family, relations and buddies, attended.

Among these current to pay their final respects on the mosque had been the prime minister’s spouse and Bandar Tun Razak MP, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, second finance minister Amir Hamzah Azizan and Football Association of Malaysia integrity committee chairman Aseh Che Mat.

Osman’s son, Dr Samsudin, advised eNM that his 93-year-old father died of previous age at Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Ampang, at 10.20pm.

Osman had served as an administrative and diplomatic officer for 30 years and held a number of positions, together with secretary-general in a number of ministries and director-general of the public services division till his retirement in 1985.

He was later energetic within the Malaysian Institute of Management and served as a board member and chairman of Southern Bank Berhad till 2005 and as Hai-O group chairman for 15 years.

Osman was additionally awarded the Royal Order of the Polar Star by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden in 2009 in recognition of his services in the course of the Japanese Red Army (JRA) hostage disaster in Malaysia in 1975.

He was one of many hostages flown to Tripoli, Libya, as a part of a deal following a raid on the AIA constructing alongside Jalan Ampang within the metropolis.

On Aug 5, 1975, 5 members of the JRA stormed the AIA constructing, which then housed the US consulate and different embassies. They seized over 50 hostages, together with diplomats and workers.

The Japanese authorities ultimately agreed to the group’s calls for and launched 5 JRA leaders, who had been flown to Kuala Lumpur by way of a Japanese Airlines DC-8 airplane.

The JRA launched the hostages and Osman was amongst a number of representatives who adopted the group to Tripoli. He returned residence later, unhurt.
